Lagwagon or Bad Astronaut?

The death of legendary punk rock drummer Derrick Plourde (Lagwagon, Mad Caddies, The Ataries, Bad Astronaut, Rich Kids on LSD) in 2005 brought significant change to the music of both Lagwagon and vocalist Joey Cape’s side project Bad Astronaut. Cape, significantly affected by his long time friend’s suicide, has set a somber tone to a recent Lagwagon release (Resolve) and now continues that trend with Twelve Small Steps, One Giant Disappointment, the latest release from Bad Astronaut. The feelings in the two records are so similar it could be constituted as the same band. Normally, this would be construed as bad thing, but for fans of Lagwagon and Bad Astronaut this is enormous as Joey Cape has hit on an incredible rise in musical and lyrical maturity. Like Resolve, the album is comprised of songs written to and for Derrick. Sadly (but great for listeners), tragedy often breeds quality music. This record is no exception. This release is spun in feelings of loss and resolve. This album is irrefutably worth your time.
